Unleashing Potential: A Journey of Transformation

I accepted a teaching assignment at a government center in the heart of a bustling metropolitan area—teaching an education recovery course at a prominent government center. My classroom was a melting pot of over 480 students, each with their own stories of struggle. Among them were homeless youth, school dropouts, gang members, parolees, and individuals for whom English was a second language.

Over 480 students entered my program, with educational levels trailing behind by as much as five grades. Class size was around 20 students per class.

Because we only had three weeks, each class had a lot to cover.

I’m not technical, yet I learned how to create video games that covered what I was teaching.

During those three weeks, I witnessed an astonishing recovery, with students advancing to three to five grade levels.

Today, I want to share an inspiring encounter with one adamant student, a gang member entrenched in a lifestyle that masked his true potential. Physically present in class, his mind seemed to reside in a different realm shaped by the façade of toughness he wore like armor.

With three weeks to instigate meaningful change, I was given a unique opportunity to accompany him to court and speak to the authorities about his progress. Recognizing the moment’s gravity, I invited him to stay after class for a candid discussion.

We must first acknowledge who we are and the assets we possess. It’s time to peel back the layers of bravado and confront the truth that lies beneath. I don’t care about the tough exterior you present to the world; I care about the person who goes home with you each night—who deserves better.

I began by sharing my perspective and expressing my belief in his latent potential. I emphasized that beneath the tough-guy image lies a remarkable individual capable of achieving greatness. But herein lies the challenge: true transformation begins with a decision to pursue a legitimate path that leads to meaningful employment and fulfillment.

As Zig Ziglar told us frequently to do a check-up from the neck up. I told the young man. We actually stopped and did a little thought management.

I said . . . 

Let’s face the hard truths:
1. You’re already entangled with the law.
2. You report to a probation officer every month.
3. Your choices are significant. If changes are not made, prison awaits—a loss of freedom that comes with a harsh reality.
4. Yes, prison may offer necessities, but it also introduces you to a world of violence and crime.

I could see the anger bubbling beneath his surface, a defense mechanism against my unwavering belief in his potential. Yet, I was determined to reach the real him, the person hidden behind the tough exterior.

We created a map and made it a part of his curriculum. I assigned him to work with and teach some more challenged students. He and I took an hour a day to teach.

He embraced the moment and became an amazing person, and I loved it. He enrolled in a Junior College and excelled. In his second year, he was elected Class President. He became incredible; I became proud so of him!

I encourage you to embrace this moment. If you live behind a facade, it’s time to discover the real you. You will find that you can be incredible and do amazing things when you are the real you.

It’s far more challenging to uphold a façade than it is to embark on the journey of transformation.
